port wine

There are some super port wines about ready to drink at the moment and you’ll find some real gems here at York Wines. First a little history to whet your apatite. Port takes its name from the Portuguese trading city of Oporto where it was created in the fifteenth century. The English loved it and helped to export it around the world, the English were at war with France and so there was no French wine so Portugal was a good option.

Port Wine differs from normal wine in that it is much thicker, sweeter and generally stronger at eighteen percent volume upward this allows the wine to be stored in wooden casks which allows the wine to breathe and give the Port its distinct aging quality. Mostly it is served as a desert wine and enjoyed with various cheeses as an alternative to sticky toffee pudding.

So, we have some superb wines on the website fro you to try with prices ranging form a little over eight pounds to over fifty pounds. Warres Vintage Port is a nineteen seventy seven stunner. It is one of the best vintages, rich and opulent and is oozing class and character and the best thing is that it’s drinking well right now but will keep for twenty years plus easy. We have twenty four but we don’t expect to hold them for long as a Port of this vintage quality is hard to find.
