Red, red wines stay close to me and don’t ever let me go. Red wine is so loved that countless musicians and poets have paid homage to it. It has been made and used for many different reasons, as a ceremonial component right through to drinking purely for the pleasure. Red wine has been made for thousands for years, science tells us that the first wines were made in the East and spread to Europe by the ancient Greeks. The actual birth place of wine will never be truly determined as wine producing grapes grow from Asia to Spain.
There are approximately sixteen grapes that are used to make red wine and each one has its own texture and taste, so a Pinot Noir grape will give you raspberry, cheery and violets and truffles where as Zinfandel will give you black cherry, pepper and mixed spices with mint, amazing that a fruit can offer such complex and varied bouquets.
Many red wine drinkers favour French wine and in particular wine produced in the Bourgogne. Here we will take a little look at some good wines from the region starting with a pinot noir. Domain Robert Sirugue is a two thousand and one Pinot that offer the drinker a gentle toffee nose with wonderful autumn fruit flavours. This wine has a small amount of oak ageing to add complexity but still retain the wines true characteristics. The beauty of this wine is that it is destined to get better for many years to come and at just under a tenner a real steal.
