South Africa has been producing some terrific wines for over four hundred years with the first vineyard planted by Jan Van Riebeeck in sixteen fifty five, he was the governor at the Cape, it was unsuccessful until the sixteen seventies when the yard was taken over by a chap called Simon Van der Stel. Van Der Stel was well versed in cultivating the necessary ingredients for wine and made good wine from his first attempt. In the next ten years the South African wine industry caught fire and headway was made with gusto. This was largely thanks to the French Huguenots who settled and brought with them a wine culture not known in South Africa before. Remember wine has been made for around seven thousand years with the French making some of the best.
