Email that was sent out in December 2020 by Alex who first visited Sicily on a sourcing trip in 2019...
Two new wines have arrived this week, and boy has it been worth the wait!
Back in May 2019, I was lucky enough to visit Sicily for a wine tasting trip. Not only did I fall in love with the incredible scenery and legendary Sicilian desserts, but also the incredible white wines. Since then, the entire York Wines team has been on a mission to find a Sicilian white wine to add to our portfolio. I am delighted to tell you that our hard work has paid off and we have managed to find not just one, but two sensational Sicilian whites which arrived and landed on our shelves this week.
For those of you who live locally, our shop is open. We will also be taking part in the Sheriff Hutton late night shopping evening on Thursday 17th December 2020. We will be open until 8pm.
Introducing Alcesti Zibibbo and Grillo
Home to Mount Etna and Montalbano, Cannoli and being kicked by Italy, Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For a relatively small island, Sicily produces an impressive range of wines. From light, florally flavoured white wines, to big, bold Etna reds, sweet Marsala and punchy Grappa, Sicily has something for everyone and we are delighted to have been able to bring you two of the best Sicilian white wines.
First up is Zibibbo. This grape is a cousin of the grape, Muscat of Alexandria, however that's where the similarities end. Zibibbo is very different, it is zingy, tingly, openly fresh and inviting. It is ever so slightly spritzy on the palate (think Portugese Vinho Verde). It is crisp and full of generous flavours of citrus with a slight orangey hint. Minerally at the finish with a generous aftertaste.
Grillo is our second new star. This is a lovely grape variety, that reflects some of Sicily's main styles of wine. Again, it is crisp, but a little drier than the Zibibbo, with a very generous intensity balanced by a softness and with that characteristic Sicilian pumice (volcanic lava) finish.
The Zibibbo and Grillo are both £9.25 a bottle. You should absolutely treat yourself this Christmas and bring a bit of Mediterranean sunshine to your festive celebrations.
