About us
York Wines is located in Sheriff Hutton, 10 miles north of York and has been trading for over 35 years. During this time, the business has grown into the busy importing, wholesale and retail business it is today. We have at least two vans out on the road most days, delivering to approximately 250 wholesale customers across a 50 mile radius. We also deliver wine to approximately 100 private retail customers a week, both across the UK via our third party courier partners, and more locally, delivered by our own drivers. Our office hours are 08:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday and 10:30 to 16:00 on Saturdays. Our physical shop is open for 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 10:30 to 16:00 on Saturdays.
The Role
This newly created position will enable the right candidate to learn about and be involved in all aspects of the business. The primary focus of the role is to develop and grow the retail arm of the business through both the physical and online shops.
Hours
· This is a full time to position to include at least two Saturdays a month (a weekday off in the week when a Saturday is worked)
· There will be occasional evening and weekend events
Core Responsibilities
· First and foremost, to increase retail sales
· Managing the day to day running of the physical shop
· Promoting new wines to retail customers through the website, emails, social media and events
· Managing stock levels and updating and feeding information into our software system and website
· Establishing and running a loyalty / subscription scheme for retail customers
· Organising, promoting and running tasting / meet the producer events for both retail and wholesale customers
· Liaising with producers and suppliers
· Tasting wines with a view to identifying new wines to list
Occasional Responsibilities
We are a small team, so occasionally there will be a need to get involved in other areas of the business including:
· Liaising with wholesale customers and creating invoices for their orders and picking wine for both wholesale and retail customer orders
· Unloading deliveries, loading vans, making up orders and delivering wine
· There may be some overlap with wholesale sales and marketing
Pay and Conditions
· Starting salary between £23,500 and £25,000 depending on experience
· 4 weeks holiday a year plus bank holidays, rising to 5 weeks after 3 years
· Initial probationary period of 3 months

Personal Attributes
The right candidate must:
· Have experience of working in the wine industry or a hospitality role where knowledge of wine was a key part of the role
· Be positive, personable, enthusiastic, proactive and practical, be able to multitask, have great attention to detail and not be afraid of hard work
· Educated to degree level or equivalent
· Hold WSET level 2 or 3 or have the equivalent experience
· Have experience in a customer facing environment
· Ability to advise customers on their wine purchases
· Have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team, get on with people and deal with customers in a polite and professional manner
There are physically demanding aspects of the job – unloading deliveries, loading vans, making up orders and delivering wine – cases can be up to 15KG – so the ability to cope with this is absolutely essential

The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to be involved predominantly in the wholesale arm of the business, but also in many of the other day to day aspects of the business. It is a broad ranging role with a variety of responsibilities. The role is varied, challenging and can be high pressured and no two days are ever the same. No prior knowledge of wine is necessary but an interest and desire to learn about it definitely is!
Hours
- Full time position
- 08:30 to 17:00 Monday to Friday
- Additional hours potentially available during busy periods e.g. Christmas, Easter, Bank Holidays
Core Responsibilities
- Contacting wholesale customers to obtain their weekly orders
- Processing and invoicing wholesale customer orders
- Updating wholesale customer stocksheets, wine lists and personalised labels
- Monitoring and maintaining stock levels (placing wine orders) using the electronic stock control system across the warehouse and the physical and online shops
- Making up wholesale, online, home delivery, and click and collect orders
- Identifying and contacting prospective wholesale customers
- Occasionally delivering to wholesale and local retail customers and covering driver holidays
- Receiving, checking and unloading deliveries – approximately 2500 bottles of wine delivered to us a week
- Serving and advising customers both over the phone and in the shop
Possible Roles for the Right Candidate
- Being involved with updating the York Wines website
- Creating and posting social media content
Pay and Conditions
- £10 per hour
- 4 weeks holiday per year, plus Bank Holidays – rising to 5 weeks after 3 years plus an additional day off during your birthday month

Personal Attributes
The right candidate must:
- be positive, personable, enthusiastic, proactive and practical, be able to multitask, have great attention to detail, not be afraid of hard work, and have a genuine interest in learning about wine
- hold a full UK driving licence
- have experience in an office or retail environment – experience in both desirable
- have good numerical and computer skills
- have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team, get on with people and deal with customers in a polite and professional manner
