National Cheese and Wine Day 25 July 2021
There are many great British duos; from seaside favourites fish and chips to Olympic stars Torvill and Dean, you could never imagine one without the other and cheese and wine is no exception - they are all perfect partners.
To celebrate National Cheese and Wine Day on 25 July we’ve taken the opportunity to highlight some of our wines with the British cheeses they pair particularly well with!
Port and Stilton
The sweetness of port combines perfectly with the complex saltiness of blue Stilton
We recommend Niepoort Late Bottled Vintage Port2015, £20.45 it is rich, full bodied and has just the right level of sweetness to perfectly compliment the Stilton without detracting from the flavour
Cabernet Sauvignon and Strong Cheddar
A full-bodied, full-flavoured cheese needs a wine with mouth drying tannins. Bold flavours from both perfectly complement each other
Try Caliterra Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018,Chile £8.95 or Domaine de la Ferrandiere CabernetSauvignon 2018, France £8.45 for full, ripe blackcurrant flavours, a touch of smoky spice and hints of chocolate
New Zealand Sauvignon and Mild Cheddar
The smooth butteriness of a milder cheddar pairs fantastically with the high acidity and lime citrus fruit flavour
New to the York Wines portfolio, we are loving Gravel& Loam Marlborough Sauvignon 2020 £10.25. Lush and elegant whilst embodying the flavours of the gravel and loam soil of the Onomalutu Gravels.
Burgundy Pinot Noir and Wensleydale
A crumbly, Wensleydale is wonderful with the autumnal cherry fruit flavours bursting from Pinot Noir. There is a reason that Wensleydale is often studded with Cranberries as the tangy red fruits share similar flavour sensations, however to avoid an overload on the sour side we would recommend the purist version - from the Wensleydale Creamery, of course! Burgundy Pinot Noirs are not the cheapest around but the Domaine Henri Delagrange HautCotes de Beaune 2019, £19.75 is a really lovely wine at a fantastic price
Rioja or Chianti and Berkswell
An artisan tangy, nutty, savoury sheep’s cheese produced in the West Midlands. The tannins and balanced blend of fruit and oak in Palaciode Otono Rioja Crianza 2016, £10.45 or Poggio MorinoChianti Classico DOCG 2018, £15.95 are the perfect compliment
Chenin Blanc and Somerset Brie
Somerset Brie is younger and fresher than its Continental cousins but still has that trademark rich butteriness. This is well complimented by the fresh zestiness of Chenin, which also has its own characteristic hints of banana and pineapple. We like Chateau de la Durandiere Saumur Blanc2018, Silver Medal, Loire £11.75 and Niel Joubert ByterChenin Blanc 2019 Paarl, South Africa, £8.65
Cotes Du Rhone and Red Leicester
The crumbly light textured Red Leicester is a great partner for a smooth Rhone red. We just love Domaine de La Georand Lirac 2019,Gold Medal, £11.45 for its smooth fruit, depth and structure.
And to complete the perfect cheeseboard - don’t forget the crackers!
